Flange Size Guide

Getting the right nipple shield size is crucial for comfortable and effective pumping. Here's your step-by-step guide to finding your perfect fit.

What You'll Need

  • A ruler or measuring tape (millimeters preferred) - or try our measuring card for easier sizing
  • A mirror for better visibility
  • Good lighting

Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions

1. Measure Your Nipple Diameter - Measure across the base of your nipple (not the areola) at its widest point. This should be done when your nipple is at rest, not erect.

2. Add 2-4mm for Comfort - Your nipple shield should be 2-4mm larger than your nipple diameter to allow for comfortable movement and prevent friction.

Size Chart - Nipple Diameter & Recommended Shield Size
15-17mm - 19-21mm shield
18-20mm - 22-24mm shield
21-23mm - 25-27mm shield
24-26mm - 28-30mm shield

Signs You Have the Right Size

  • Your nipple moves freely in the tunnel
  • No pain or discomfort during pumping
  • Effective milk expression
  • No white ring around your nipple after pumping

Signs Your Shield is Too Small

  • Nipple rubs against the sides
  • Pain during pumping
  • White ring around nipple after use
  • Reduced milk output

Signs Your Shield is Too Large

  • Areola is pulled into the tunnel
  • Reduced suction effectiveness
  • Discomfort from too much tissue being drawn in

Need Help? - If you're unsure about your size or experiencing discomfort, consider consulting with a lactation consultant. They can help ensure you get the perfect fit for your pumping journey.
Remember: Your nipple size may change throughout your breastfeeding journey, so don't hesitate to remeasure if you experience discomfort.

Personalised Comfort with Smart Controls

This pump doesn’t just express milk — it adapts to you. With 6 stimulation modes to trigger let-down and 9 expression levels ranging from gentle to hospital-grade (up to 321 mmHg), you can dial in exactly the right setting for your body. The smart digital display makes it easy to track your session and switch between modes with a single touch.

Quiet and Discreet

At a maximum of 45dB, the Tiny Bloom Portable Pump is whisper-quiet — quieter than a normal conversation. Pump at your desk, in a meeting room, in the car, or while your baby sleeps beside you. No one needs to know.

Wireless and Truly Portable

No tubes. No cords. No searching for a power outlet. The 1400mAh rechargeable battery gives you up to 2.5 hours of pumping on a single charge — enough for multiple sessions throughout the day. Many mums only charge every 2–3 days.

Flange Sizing Guide

Getting the right fit is the single most important factor for comfort and milk output. This pump includes a 24mm flange. Additional sizes — 21mm and 27mm — are available separately.

  • Measure your nipple diameter (not the areola) in millimetres — ideally after a pumping session when the nipple is at its largest.
  • Your flange should be nipple diameter + 2–3mm of clearance. The nipple should move freely without the areola being pulled in.
  • Use our nipple measuring card to find your correct size at home.
  • If you’re between sizes, size up for comfort.
  • Additional flange sizes available here.

Signs your flange fits correctly: nipple moves freely, no areola tissue is pulled in, no pinching or rubbing, and milk flows steadily within 2–3 minutes of starting expression mode.

Who It’s For

The Tiny Bloom Portable Electric Breast Pump is built for mums who need reliable, hospital-grade performance without being tethered to a wall. It’s ideal for:

  • Working mums who pump during breaks at the office, in the car, or in a meeting room — no outlet needed.
  • On-the-go parents who need a pump that travels easily — road trips, appointments, visiting family, or international travel.
  • NICU mums who need a portable, effective pump they can bring to hospital for regular sessions.
  • Exclusive pumpers who need a reliable, comfortable pump for 8–12 sessions per day.
  • First-time mums looking for an affordable, effective alternative to expensive hospital-grade pumps.
  • Mums who want hands-free pumping — pair with a hands-free pumping bra for completely hands-free operation.

Milk Output — What to Expect

  • First sessions: Output may be lower as your body adjusts to the pump. Most mums see improvement within 3–5 sessions.
  • Established supply: Many mums express 60–150ml per session per breast, though this varies widely and is completely normal.
  • Maximising output: Pump in the morning when supply is highest, stay hydrated, start with stimulation mode to trigger let-down, then switch to expression mode.
  • Collection bottle capacity: 180ml — sufficient for most single sessions. Compatible with Tiny Bloom storage bags for high producers.

Easy to Clean

Only 5 milk-contact parts to clean after every session. The motor unit is never submerged — only the milk-contact parts are washed.

  • Rinse under warm running water immediately after use.
  • Wash with warm soapy water or place in the dishwasher (top rack) — parts are dishwasher-safe.
  • Air dry on a clean paper towel or drying rack.
  • Sterilise daily using a steam steriliser, microwave steriliser bag, or by boiling for 5 minutes.

Part replacement: Replace the diaphragm and valve every 4–6 weeks for optimal suction. Replacement parts available here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this pump hospital-grade?

Yes. Suction ranges from 18.9 kPa to 42.9 kPa (141–321 mmHg) across 9 expression levels — comparable to clinical-grade pumps. Many mums report better output than with expensive Medela pumps.

What flange size do I need?

This pump includes a 24mm flange. Additional sizes — 21mm and 27mm — are available separately. Use our nipple measuring card to find your correct size.

How many modes does it have?

It has 3 Pumping Modes to trigger let-down and 6 expression levels for milk collection — giving you full control over comfort and output.

Can I use this pump hands-free?

Yes — pair it with a hands-free pumping bra. The all-in-one design has no external tubes or cords, so it sits securely in your bra while you work, eat, or care for your baby.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 2.5 hours on a single charge via USB. Many mums only charge every 2–3 days even with frequent use.

Can I pump directly into storage bags?

Yes — compatible with Tiny Bloom storage bags and standard baby bottles (Avent compatible).

Is it dishwasher-safe?

Yes — all milk-contact parts are dishwasher-safe (top rack). Never submerge the motor unit.

Yes. All milk-contact parts are 100% BPA-free.

Can I use this if I have a low milk supply?

Yes. The 6 stimulation modes and hospital-grade suction are effective for supply building. Pumping frequently (8–12 times per day) and ensuring correct flange fit are the most important factors.

Here What Our Mums Are Saying

Breast pump with a bottle attached on a neutral background

The Tiny Bloom Difference

Powerful Suction (138–318mmHg): Hospital-grade suction levels designed for efficient expression with comfort in mind.

Multiple Modes: Expression, Stimulation, and Mixed each with multiple levels for your comfort—simple, effective, and tailored to your needs.

Hygienic & Safe: BPA & DEHP-free, closed system for milk purity, and easy-to-clean parts.

Made for Real Life: Compact, lightweight, and rechargeable—pump directly into bottles or storage bags, anytime, anywhere.

With Tiny Bloom, mums can enjoy reliable pumping power in a sleek, portable design that fits effortlessly into busy lives.

How to use your Pump

Before first use, clean, sterilise, and charge the pump for 2 hours.

Place the pump on your breast and tap the power button to begin. The pump starts automatically in Stimulation Phase — a faster, shorter rhythm that mimics your baby's natural sucking pattern to trigger let-down. After 2 minutes, it switches automatically to Expression Phase, which uses a slower, longer rhythm to gently collect milk.

Use the smart touchscreen to adjust between modes and find your ideal comfort level. Start at a lower setting and increase gradually — the goal is to reduce pressure on your breast while optimising milk flow. As your breastfeeding journey progresses, you may find you use different stimulation and expression levels as your body changes through postpartum recovery.

Cleaning and Care

The Tiny Bloom Portable Pump is designed with simplicity in mind — just a few easy-to-assemble parts that take minutes to clean. The closed system keeps milk safely separated from the motor for total hygiene.

After every session:

  • Separate and rinse all milk-contact parts immediately after use to remove breast milk residue and prevent bacterial growth.
  • Wash with drinking-quality tap or bottled water and warm soapy water.
  • When cleaning the valves, do not use small brushes or pointed objects — be careful not to puncture them.
  • Air dry on a clean paper towel or drying rack.

Motor unit: Never submerge or wash the motor. Wipe down the pump body with a damp (not wet) cloth only if needed.

Please note: This pump is not recommended for the dishwasher — heat may damage or discolour the silicone parts.

Sterilising (recommended daily): Use a steam steriliser, microwave steriliser bag, or boil parts for 5 minutes to kill bacteria and viruses on part surfaces.

Pump, Store and Feed - All in One

The Tiny Bloom Portable Pump works directly with our breast milk storage bags, giving you two simple options: store your milk for later, or attach a bottle teat and feed your baby straight away.

Pumping into the bag: Attach the adapter to the milk bag, then connect it to your breast pump. Don't overfill — leave room for expansion when freezing. For faster freezing and thawing, lay the bag flat. Always label and date each bag before storing.

Storing your milk: To preserve the nutrients in your breast milk, thaw overnight in the refrigerator or hold the sealed bag under warm running water (max. 37°C). Gently shake to blend any separated fat. Once thawed, use within 24 hours and keep refrigerated.

Important:

  • Do not thaw in a microwave or boiling water.
  • Do not refreeze thawed breast milk.
  • Never leave your baby unattended while feeding from a bag.

Our breast milk bags are pre-sterilised, designed for breast milk only, and are single-use — dispose of after each use.
