Flange Size Guide

Getting the right nipple shield size is crucial for comfortable and effective pumping. Here's your step-by-step guide to finding your perfect fit.

What You'll Need

  • A ruler or measuring tape (millimeters preferred) - or try our measuring card for easier sizing
  • A mirror for better visibility
  • Good lighting

Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions

1. Measure Your Nipple Diameter

Measure across the base of your nipple (not the areola) at its widest point. This should be done when your nipple is at rest, not erect.

2. Add 2-4mm for Comfort

Your nipple shield should be 2-4mm larger than your nipple diameter to allow for comfortable movement and prevent friction.

Size Chart

Nipple Diameter Recommended Shield Size
15-17mm 19-21mm shield
18-20mm 22-24mm shield
21-23mm 25-27mm shield
24-26mm 28-30mm shield

Signs You Have the Right Size

  • Effective milk expression
  • No white ring around your nipple after pumping

Signs Your Shield is Too Small

  • Nipple rubs against the sides
  • Pain during pumping
  • White ring around nipple after use
  • Reduced milk output

Signs Your Shield is Too Large

  • Areola is pulled into the tunnel
  • Reduced suction effectiveness
  • Discomfort from too much tissue being drawn in

Measuring Card – For the Perfect Pumping Experience

The size of the flange is very important for comfortable and efficient pumping. Some mums experience uncomfortable pumping, that may cause nipple and/or areola swelling. Incorrect flange sizes can also affect how much milk can be expressed or how long it takes to express milk. The standard 24mm size of most breast pump flanges is often too large for many women.

  • It is easy to use this flange measuring card. We advise measuring both nipples, as they may be different sizes. The best time to measure is an unswollen nipple, 1-2 hours after pumping or breastfeeding.
  • Place the nipple in the smallest circle that can comfortably fit. It may help to use a phone or mirror.
  • Choose an insert size 1-2mm bigger than the snug fit of your nipple in the measurer. Eg if your nipple measures 16mm, choose the 17mm insert.
  • Made of food-grade silicone.

Or you can use the tape measure.

  1.  Stimulate your nipple to make it perk up.
  2. Hold the tape measure at a perpendicular angle and line the 0 scale with your nipple base at the same horizontal l line, also with the measure edge meet your areola.
  3. Get the millimeters number between the nipple base and the nipple top, and the size measuring is done.  ( as seen in the second photo below)
